What do I save if I book with points?

That’s a great question, and the short answer is, it’s complicated. The easiest way to answer it is through an example:

A client wants two business class return tickets flying from Perth to London, paid for using Amex Points.

Amex Points Needed

Airline FF Points required for the seats is 600,000.

The Amex Points conversion rate to Airline FF Points is 2 to 1

The client will need to convert 1,200,000 Amex Points to receive 600,000 Airline FF Points

Cost of Amex Points

The client earns 2.25 Amex Points for every dollar spent using their Amex Platinum Card

The total Amex spend needed to get the required points is 1,200,000 / 2.25 = $533,333.33

Amex charges 1.8% on transactions

The cost to the client to get the points is $533,333.33 * 1.8% = $9,600

Cost of Paid Tickets

Two paid return business class tickets would typically cost $25,000.

Savings Using Points to Book

The total savings to the client would be $25,000 – $9,600 = $15,400

Savings Converting Points to Cash

If the client had opted to use the same number of Amex points to offset the cost of the paid ticket, the savings would only have been 1,200,000 * 0.005 = $6,000!

How to get the most value from your Amex Membership Rewards points

If you were to purchase a new laptop computer for $2,000 and paid for it using your Amex card, you would receive 2.25 points for each dollar you spent (depending on your card), totalling 4250 Amex points.

If the merchant charged you a 2.5% fee on the purchase, the points you earned would have cost you $50 ($2000 x 2.5% = $50).

If the merchant fee was 1.8%, the 2000 points would have only cost you $36. This may not seem like much, but it all adds up when you’re dealing with hundreds of thousands or millions of points.

Paying higher merchant fees mean that the potential value of your earned reward points drops.

In order to maximise the value of your points, we recommend using American Express only when the merchant fee is under 2%.
